Let’s ‘Face’ the Essentials!
Foundations, powders, concealers, eyeshadows, lashes,
lipsticks, and liners…Oh, my! The world of makeup can seem overwhelming,
especially if you are a newcomer. The list of products and the numerous brands
to choose from is really endless and can leave you feeling at a loss. However,
venturing into makeup doesn’t have to be a daunting task. The key is to start
building your makeup kit with some basic items so you can get started the right
way.

If you are new to makeup, you may not be aware of the importance of using the right tools to apply the product. For example, one of the biggest mistakes you can make is trying to use the applicators that come in the compacts at the drug store. While these types of tools may work in a pinch, they shouldn’t be your go-to applicators. It is really important to invest in quality brushes so that your makeup goes on flawlessly and blends easily.
The makeup brushes that are absolute must-haves in your kit are:
- A Flat Foundation Brush
- A Flat Concealer Brush
- A Blush Brush
- A Large Fluffy Powder Brush
- A Flat Eyeshadow Brush
- A Crease Brush
- And A Fluffy Eye Shadow Brush For Blending

Once you have your brushes, you want to make sure that you have
the following in your makeup bag: a quality liquid foundation in a shade that
matches your skin tone perfectly; a cream concealer that completely covers dark
circles and other skin imperfections; a setting powder for your concealer; a
matte powder to set your foundation, and a neutral blush. The top brands that I
recommend are Bobbi Brown, MAC, and Makeup Forever. I find that these three
brands have the best quality foundations, variety of shades, and consistency.
Many women don’t have
time to do extensive eye makeup in the mornings because they are on the go.
Unless you are proficient in creating a perfect smoky eye or multicolored look
in less than 20 minutes, most likely you will opt for a more basic makeup look
that is natural, yet polished. One of the current trends for the spring is very
natural looking makeup, black eyeliner, and a nude lip. This look is easy to
achieve and doesn’t take long. Always make sure your skin is clean,
moisturized, and primed for your foundation.
The first thing I typically do in my makeup routine is shape my eyebrows. After that, I apply the concealer under my eyes to get rid of any dark circles. Next, I apply liquid foundation by dispensing a few pumps of the product on the back of my hand and picking up the product with my foundation brush. I apply it all over my face to the desired coverage, making sure to blend it all the way out toward my hairline and past my jaw line so that it looks natural.

After foundation is
applied, you will want to set the concealer under your eyes by using a loose
translucent setting powder, such as MAC Prep and Prime Finishing powder. Then,
I set my foundation by buffing a matte powder into my skin with a large fluffy
powder brush or flat top buffing brush. Apply blush to the apples of your
cheeks, line your eyes with black eyeliner, a few coats of mascara, and swipe
your lips with some nude gloss. You will be ready to head out the door in less
than 20 minutes!
Putting on a fresh
face for the day doesn’t have to be complicated. As you start out with an
easy, breezy look like this, you will find yourself wanting to experiment with
different looks and possibly add color to your makeup “wardrobe”. There are two
rules in the world of makeup; make sure that your makeup is properly applied
and most importantly, have fun!
Dare to ‘play’ with
makeup… and see how good you feel!
